It is not often I travel to Yahoo for answers to some of the more meaningful questions of life: Where did we come from? What is the purpose of Life? Do old newspapers have value? However, I recently came upon a post on Yahoo Voices which did a decent job of handling this last question.  It begins:

You’ve Happened Upon a Stack of Old Newspapers…Some Have Historic Headlines! Are They Worth Anything?

Let face it, old newspapers don’t get much respect. In today’s world, they’re generally seen as material for the recycler. And years ago, many libraries simply tossed them out after converting them to micro or digital files. But do old or antique newspapers have any collectible value? The answer is a definite…maybe!

Newspapers have been around almost as long as the Gutenberg Press. And in general they’ve been seen as expendable–meant to be read a time or two and then thrown away, or used for fish wrap or some other convenient purpose. But newspapers also have tremendous historic value… (read more)

(Unfortunately, the Yahoo article has since expired. If anyone has discovered great articles regarding the value of newspapers, please let us know and we’ll consider adding it. In the meantime, feel free to use the www.RareNewspapers.com website for comparables.)

We only deal with newspapers, and those we know who are knowledgeable with magazines specialize in pre-1950 magazines. Sorry.

I have a plethora of historical newspapers (entire newspapers) dating back to around 1915 till now. Pretty much every major event between those dates I have a full paper of. Also, I have many, many historical magazines same dates. Let me know if you’re interested…
    Thanks,

Unfortunately we do not. Thanks for checking with us.

  10. GuyHeilenman on June 12th, 2015 6:41 am

Hello Sabrina – Without having it in hand there is no way to know for certain, but unless the full issue itself is of significant value, sections rarely have value. Checking your date, this does not appear to be the case. Sorry.

  11. GuyHeilenman on June 12th, 2015 6:47 am

We would need to know the exact date and a statement regarding completeness and condition. A picture or two would also help. Feel free to respond with this information to Guy at guy@rarenewspapers.com.

    Hello Toni,

This is a tough one. Right now, too many people have these to make them worth anything. They are simply too common. Sorry.

In good condition considering how old it is. Centralia Sentinel is from a small town Centralia in Southern Illinois, can anybody help me with info on this, and what if anything it may be worth?

I have several “pivotal events in history,” Sacramento Bee newspapers. All of them all fully intact. Some of the few headlines, President Reagan dying, the turning of the century, when we officially went to war in Iraq, to name a few. Are they worth any money?

I found a few pages from an old newspaper in my basement. It is dated April 10,1968. There is an article on MLK’s death and a pic of the funeral procession. Wondering if it is worth anything. It is yellowed and frayed, but still readable. It also has ads with appropriate price for the day including an automobile. About 4 pages total, some torn a bit. Please advise. Thanks.

I have a whole newspaper it was the first of the new millennium the year 2000 .. I realize it’s only 15 years old but still.. I wonder if it’s worth anything or will be one day. I also have a series of newspapers from Dale Earnhardt ‘s home town covering his death there are 6 of them in order by dates and every one is in perfect condition.. i figured one day it might have been worth something to a sports fan.. like sports memorabilia

  30. GuyHeilenman on July 1st, 2015 1:01 pm

The Dale Earnhardt set is worth hanging onto for now. In time it may have value – although it is too soon to know how much. If Dale’s death reports begin to have value at some point, those from his hometown will certainly rise to the top of the (desired issue) list.

    Hello,
I found an old scrapbook with newspaper clippings era 1943ish. Some are of Patton, Eisenhower, and a full page of Audey Murphy, age 20, in uniform. Another of the placing of the flag at Iwo Jima and also a picture with announcement of two of the soldiers, one getting married and the other his best man. Could any of this be of value?

    Thank you!

Hello Jerome – Unless they are the key events – V-J Day, V-E Day, D-Day, Pearly Harbor, Hitler dead, etc., they do not likely have much value.
