This story has been told in my family since it was published in a Sunday supplement magazine in 1965. When I began researching my family’s history, the first thing I tried to do was prove/disprove the truth of it. As another reader has stated, I couldn’t find any references contemporary to the incident, even after scouring the local newspapers of the day. All the available articles are from the late 1930s in which Bill recounts the story himself, which neither proves nor disproves anything. But he was convincing enough to get Robert Ripley to have him on his radio show, “Believe it or Not!” around 1937 to tell the story of Half a Run. As a result of that appearance, he was reunited with his oldest son (my grandfather) whom he hadn’t seen in nearly 40 years. Each thought the other was dead.
So, as much as the Setley family would like to believe this story, there’s no proof to support it.
Judith Setley Wright, great granddaughter of Wild Bill Setley
P.S. The part about Ripley and the reunion are true. Only the part about the unusual baseball score is in question.
