You’ve Happened Upon a Stack of Old Newspapers…Some Have Historic Headlines! Are They Worth Anything?

Let face it, old newspapers don’t get much respect. In today’s world, they’re generally seen as material for the recycler. Newspapers have been around almost as long as the Gutenberg Press. And in general they’ve been seen as expendable–meant to be read a time or two and then thrown away, or used for fish wrap or some other convenient purpose. But newspapers also have tremendous historic value… (read more)

(Unfortunately, the Yahoo article has since expired. If anyone has discovered great articles regarding the value of newspapers, please let us know and we’ll consider adding it. In the meantime, feel free to use the www.RareNewspapers.com website for comparables.)

  21. GuyHeilenman on July 13th, 2016 11:30 am

Hello Elizabeth. They do have some (small) value, but the key is to find a buyer. We would not be interested as we already have many. You can always put the dates into our website’s search engine to see the prices we offer for these. If, upon searching by date (mm/dd/yyyy) nothing is found, it likely has no value. Hi Guy, I have found a paper in my loft, its not the best of condition but its complete and very readable, its “The Sun” dated Thursday, September, 6, 1984 and has the headline “MOHICAN AGED FIVE” it was 16 pence then and I’m just wondering if its anything of importance or do I throw it away? Kind regards

  43. GuyHeilenman on August 16th, 2016 12:25 pm

Hello Shamar – I 40+ years we have yet to come across anyone seeking such “collector’s edition” newspapers. If it has value, it is outside of our experience.

  44. GuyHeilenman on August 16th, 2016 12:28 pm

  47. Casey Palacios on August 22nd, 2016 1:25 pm

I have a copy of The Schenectady Weekly Union form July 2, 1868. There is a section that shows the Union Republican Nominations for President, Gen. Ulysus S. Grant. For Vice-President, Hon. Schuyler Colfax. And I also have one from Providence Daily Journal dated October 7, 1864 and it has a sections showing the National Union Nominations. For President it says Abraham Lincoln of Illinois and for Vice-President it says Andrew Johnson of Tennessee. Any idea where I can go to find out if it is worth anything?

  48. Greg mccullum on August 22nd, 2016 2:08 pm

I have a august 4th 1930 dallas morning newspaper .Sixteen pages laminated is it worth anything?

  49. GuyHeilenman on August 26th, 2016 7:48 am

Hello Greg: Without having it in hand there is no way to know for certain, but in nearly 40 years of collecting and selling, we’ve never had anyone ask for one – and our database of key events does not indicate it might have value.

  50. GuyHeilenman on August 26th, 2016 7:49 am

Hello Casey: Please send details to Tim Hughes at timothy@rarenewspapers.com
