Security taken for Kennedy’s visit to Dallas…

One of the interesting opportunities newspapers present is the ability to read news with hindsight. The early edition of the “Dallas Times-Herald” newspaper of Nov. 22, 1963 (see below), the edition prior to the later edition reporting the assassination, has much coverage of JFK’s visit to Texas and the excitement around his planned visit to Dallas later that day. One ironic headline on the front page reads: “Secret Service Sure All Secure” with the article providing much detail on the security efforts to make for a safe visit to Dallas.

    In the past 2 years, the surviving Secret Service agents have broken their silence on the Kennedy assassination. 2 good books to read are Gerald Blaine’s “The Kennedy Detail” and Clint Hill’s “Mrs. Kennedy And Me”. Clint Hill was the agent that jumped onto the trunk of the Presidential limo after the shots.
    “The Kennedy Detail” is not just about the assassination, but provides alot of good detail from the 5 surviving agents in charge with protecting the Kennedys from 1961 to 1963…and NO, there was no affair with Marilyn Monroe (and the author could have easily “cashed in” if there was truth to it).
    Clint Hill’s book is a very personal account of his duty as the agent in charge of protecting Jackie Kennedy and the painful detail of the chaos at Parkland Hospital after the shooting.
    Both very good books.
