Resources of collectors…

[1]One of the most frequently asked questions regarding the rare newspaper [2] hobby concerns available resources.  Awhile back we posted a general response to this on eBay titled, “What Resources are Available for Newspaper Collectors?”.  Although we’ll continue to look at this question in detail, we thought newcomers might appreciate a general overview.  An excerpt of this post is as follows:

1)  Price Guide For Rare & Historic Newspapers?
2)  Storage & Display Options For Colonial, Civil War & 20th Century Newspapers?
3)  Reference Books On The History Of Old Newspapers?
4) A Club Of Collectors Of Old Newspapers?

What storage & display options are recommended for the old newspaper hobbyist? How about reference material on the hobby?

1) Being a relatively unknown hobby has its advantages…

I have a slightly off topic question you may be able to answer about John Dunlap of Dunlap Broadsides fame and printer of the Pennsylvania Packet. Is it known how many printing presses Dunlap owned and used in 1776? Is it likely that he had only one press? In those days, type was set by hand so an issue of the newspaper is not likely to have had that great a circulation that multiple presses (and double the typesetting labor) would be required.

I’m wondering if it is possible or likely that the Dunlap Broadsides of the Declaration of Independence were all printed on the same press that printed a typical 1776 issue of the Pennsylvania Packet. Is there any record of the Dunlap operation in 1776?

Hello Steve – Intriguing questions. Unfortunately, we have no idea. It would be great to hear from others whom might have expertise in this area.
