The “Supplement to the New-York Daily Tribune“, May 11, 1849, has the following at the top of the front page. Note the incredibly strong pro-slavery bias in the first paragraph:

    Are you aware of the story of Henry “Box” Brown, who successfully escaped enslavement by having a sympathetic friend box him up and mail him to Philadelphia. I believe this occured a few months before this story. He was successfully delivered to the office of the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee office, where the US Mint now stands. Brown wrote a narrative of his life and journey to Philadelphia. It’s a good read…
    On closer inspection, I see the name of the man that mailed the unfortunate cargo was Samuel Smith. I may be mistaken, but I think that was the name of the man that mailed Henry “Box” Brown to Philadelphia.
